BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (8-5, 3-1 MAC) dominated from start to finish as they cruised to a 78-59 win over Eastern Michigan at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bulls improve to 3-1 in league play for the third straight year.
Buffalo was led by their superb backcourt once again as three Bulls scored 20+ on the day, led by Zakiyah Winfield who recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to go with five assists and three steals. Re'Shawna Stone narrowly missed out on a double-double of her own with 20 points and eight rebounds and Jazmine Young also scored 20 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The Eagles took an early 10-5 lead before Stone hit a three and then Young found Winfield for a layup off an out of bounds play to tie the game at five. The Bulls extended their lead as Young hit a skip pass three and Kayla Salmons got a layup plus the foul to give UB a 15-12 lead at the first media timeout. Both offenses hit a lull before Winfield came up with a steal and scored the fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 17-14 lead at the end of the first.
Buffalo opened the second quarter on an 8-1 run, capped by back-to-back layups from Winfield, to put UB up 23-15 and force an early EMU timeout. The Eagles used a 5-0 run to cut the UB lead to three, but Perkins and Winfield hit a pair of midrange jumpers to limit the damage. Young and Winfield continued to attack as they got a pair of jumpers in the lane to drop and the UB defense held the Eagles scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter to give the Bulls a 33-23 lead at the half.
Salmons continued to attack the glass as she got an offensive rebound putback to put UB up 37-25 but Eastern Michigan used a 5-0 run to cut the UB lead back to seven, before Young got a jumper through contact for the and-one play and later got to the charity stripe and knocked down a pair to put UB up 42-30 at the media timeout. The Bulls stayed aggressive and extended the run to 12-2 as Stone got to the basket at will, first with an and-one bucket off glass and then she blew by her defender again to give Buffalo a 17-point lead and force an EMU timeout at the 2:16 mark and they would lead 54-37 at the end of the third.
The teams traded threes to open the fourth quarter before the Bulls rattled off a 6-0 run in less than a minute, sparked by a pair of steals and scores from Winfield and Stone, to force an EMU timeout and give UB a 65-46 lead at the 6:33 mark. Buffalo continued to pour it on as Latrice Perkins got a steal and scored and later, Winfield scored in transition to give Buffalo it's largest lead of the game, 75-50 with just over two minutes to play as the Bulls cruised to victory.
Buffalo held their seventh opponent of the season to under 60 points and are now 6-1 in those games. The Bulls scored 21 points off 17 EMU turnovers while also outscoring the Eagles 42-36 in the paint and recording eight fastbreak points. UB shot 50.9% from the field and went 19-of-22 from the charity stripe on the afternoon.
"I'm so excited for this team and how they are playing right now," said head coach Becky Burke. "We have really come a long way and figured out how and when we play our best basketball. They came out today and followed our game plan to the highest level. We're really happy for them and excited for them moving forward."
