HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo cross country team competed at the Harry Lang XC Invitational hosted by Colgate University on Saturday morning. The men finished in second place with a total score of 38 points as the women finished third with 70 points.
On the men's side, four Bulls recorded top-10 finishes. Ryan Buzby placed fourth with a time of 20:18.9, and Sean O'Brien claimed sixth place in 20:29.8. Jacob Brink (ninth place, 20:41.8) and Ty Fluharty (10th place, 20:49.1) both finished in the top-10 in their UB debuts. Brett Russell (12th place, 20:50.0) rounded out the top-five for the Bulls.
"The men showed the fitness they have built over a full summer of hard work. This was a great start to the season, but there is certainly work to be done as we prepare for our championship races later in the season," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "We should be even stronger at Iona when we add a few guys that we held out this weekend."
Leading the way for the women's team was Alexia Hecico, finishing in eighth place with a time of 17:53.3. Paris Welker placed 12th in her UB debut in 18:37.4. McKenzie Ryan finished 17th with a time of 18:51.3. Also making their UB debuts, Vassi Klock (22nd place, 19:02.2) and Bronagh Cassidy (27th place, 19:21.7) capped off the Bulls' top-five finishers.
"This was a good early season evaluation for our women. Today, Alexia stepped up with one of her strongest team races in a couple of years," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "The large freshman group shows a promising future. We have a lot of work in front of us and expect continued growth throughout the season and year."
The Bulls will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 16 as they travel to Iona College for the Iona Meet of Champions.
