BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field teams are ready to take on the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend. The squad will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the first time this season. Western Michigan University will host the championships at the Kanley Track as they are set to start on Thursday, May 12 at 10 a.m. Day two of the championships will begin at 11 a.m. of Friday as the final day will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Brandon Burke will attempt to win the men's high jump for the fourth consecutive MAC indoor and outdoor seasons. Burke, the school record holder, went on to be named MAC Men's Field Athlete of the Year at the 2021 MAC Outdoor Championships. As he went on to the NCAA Indoor Championships, he finished seventh overall to earn All-American Honors. At the 2022 MAC Indoor Championships, he went on to win the title and represented UB at the NCAA Championships.
Like The Masters, a tradition unlike any other is UB winning the men's shot put. Since 2010, the Bulls have won the event 10 of the last 11 MAC Outdoor Championships. Reigning champion Jonathan Surdej will do his best to keep the tradition alive.
Senior thrower Molly McCreedy has had a very consistent and dominant season in the shot put. She is fifth in UB history with a toss of 15.76-meters. Asia Hoyte looks to earn a medal this year in the weight throw. Hoyte ranks eighth in the event in program history.
The men's distance team has been fantastic all season and tearing up the record books. In the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs, the Bulls have set seven new top-10 times. Ryan Buzby set the new school record in the 5,000-meter run in 14:12.22. Riley Jones finds herself in the top-10 in three women's distance events: the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs.
