BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team ended the season by winning their third straight match on Sunday afternoon as the Bulls defeated Ball State 4-3. UB will finish the year 4-6 in league play.
The Bulls started with a strong showing in doubles, picking up wins at two and three. At second doubles, Greg Hastings and Finn Macnamara scored a 7-5 win, while Simon Wibler and Daniils Snaiders won 6-3 at three, giving UB the 1-0 lead.
Buffalo took a 2-0 lead as freshman Cheng Tang had a dominating 6-1, 6-4 victory at first singles. Wins at second and sixth singles for Ball State tied the match up, but the Bulls regained control.
Hastings won his first set in a tiebreaker at five, and after dropping the second, he came back to win the third 6-3, pulling UB back ahead 3-2 in the overall match.
UB would go on to clinch the match at third singles, courtesy of the veteran Wibler. The Sweden native won his opening set 7-5 and then fought his way back in a second set tiebreaker, winning 7-5 in the breaker, and clinching the match for UB.
The Cardinals took the final match at fourth singles for the 4-3 decision.
"Obviously we are disappointed we aren't playing in the conference championship this year, but I am very proud of the way we came through this last weekend, beating two of top teams in the MAC.," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Even with the obstacles we faced this year, we were within points of being a really good team. Rest assured the future of UB men's tennis is bright. Go Bulls!"
