BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over Bowling Green on Friday afternoon as the Bulls picked up their fourth straight victory. The win improves the Bulls to 16-6 on the season and 5-3 in MAC play.
Playing shorthanded, the Bulls got an early advantage with forfeits at third doubles and sixth singles. Buffalo's number one doubles team of Azra Deniz Comlek and Pia Schwarz won 6-2 to claim the doubles point and the forfeit at six singles gave UB the 2-0 lead.
At first singles, Bowling Green's player was forced to retire due to injury early in the second set, giving the win to senior Hsin-Yuan Shih. Comlek then clinched the match at fourth singles, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The final three matches all went to a third set, with the Bulls claiming two of them. Schwarz won at second singles 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, while Gabriella Akopyan scored a 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 win at three. The Falcons won their lone match in three sets at fifth singles.
"I thought we played some really good tennis today and overall, I really like where the team's mindset is at right now," said head coach Kristen Maines. "We were deliberate in our decisions on the court and we did a good job making our opponents uncomfortable out there."
The Bulls close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of matches beginning on Friday at Toledo. UB will host Miami (OH) next Sunday.
