BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team won their fifth straight match on Friday afternoon as the Bulls took four of the six matches in singles to defeat the Toledo Rockets, 4-3, splitting the season series with them. UB is now 17-6 on the season and 6-3 in MAC play.
The Rockets got on the board first with wins at first and third doubles to take the 1-0 lead. However, UB quickly tied it up at sixth singles as sophomore Mariana Carvajal Torres scored an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Rockets went back ahead with a win at three, but UB again tied it up as junior Azra Deniz Comlek won at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-2.
UB and Toledo split matches at first and fifth singles as the Rockets won at the top spot, while junior Ambre Amat won at five, 7-6, 6-4, which tied the contest up at 3-3 with just second singles to finish between Pia Schwarz and Sloane Teske.
Teske took the opening set 6-2, but Schwarz bounced right back with a second set win, 6-2. Teske went ahead 5-3 in the third set and need just one more game, but that would never come. Mother nature forced the two competitors indoors with Schwarz trailing in the set, but she ripped off wins in the next four games, taking the set 7-5, and leading the Bulls to the 4-3 win in the match.
UB will close out the regular season on Sunday at home at 1pm at the UB Tennis Courts. It will be the last regular season match for seniors Hsin-Yuan Shih and Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou.
