HAMMOND, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team split a pair of games at the Lion Classic on Friday. The Bulls fell to Marist 2-1 in extra innings in the first game of the day, before defeating the hosts, Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2 in game two.
The Bulls flashed some leather early in game one as Alexis Lucyshyn and Rachel Steffan completed a double play to end the second inning.
The Red Foxes got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Anna Aguon and Brianna Castro reached on singles to left in the top of the fourth, but the Bulls were unable to plate a run.
It continued to be a pitcher's duel until the top of the sixth when Steffan drilled a solo home run to left center field to tie the game at one.
Marist threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on third by Lucyshyn and the UB defense recorded a big groundout to send the game to extra innings.
Buffalo was unable to plate a run in the top of the eighth and that would prove to be costly as Marist took advantage of a UB error to walk off with the win. Lucyshyn had a solid day in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five batters in 7.2 innings of work.
The Bulls got the bats going early in game two as Steffan tripled down the right field line and Lucyshyn followed with a two-run blast to right field to give UB an early 2-0 lead.
The Lions got on the board with an RBI single to cut the lead to one, but the Bulls answered in the top of the third as Aguon led off with a double to left center field and Steffan followed with her second triple of the game, this time an RBI down the right field line, to put Buffalo up 3-1.
The Bulls put two on in the top of the fourth and capitalized scoring on an SLU error and then Castro smacked an RBI triple down the right field line to give UB a 5-1 lead and that would be all they needed to secure the victory.
Steffan led the Bulls at the plate going 3-for-4 in the win, while Aguon also recorded a multi-hit game. Sophomore Julia Tarantino got the win in the circle, striking out four batters in a complete game effort.
Buffalo concludes weekend play on Saturday with a pair of games, beginning with a contest against Marist at 12pm (ET) and followed by a game against Southeastern Louisiana at 2pm.
