BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (17-19, 6-5 MAC) split their Friday doubleheader against the Miami (OH) RedHawks (25-10, 7-4 MAC) at Nan Harvey Field. Miami took the first game, 10-3, before the Bulls won 9-5. This marked their first win since 2018, snapping a 19-game losing streak to the RedHawks.
GAME 1
The RedHawks found an early lead as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a 2-RBI single to right center. Buffalo punched back in the bottom half of the inning. Reagan Terwilliger reached first on a walk, but Nicole Allen would bring her home on a double down the right field line.
Miami added to their lead in the top of the second. An RBI double pushed their lead to 3-1, with the next batter following it up with an RBI single to make it 4-1. A two-run home run made it a 6-1 ball game.
The Bulls added to their total in the third inning. Emily Gorman led the inning off with a single in the second base hole. Terwilliger showed off her wheels as she hit her fourth triple of the season to right center to score Gorman. Allen hit Terwilliger in on a fielder's choice to cut Miami's lead to 6-3. The RedHawks cooled off the Bulls' offense to get out of the inning with the lead intact.
A two-run homer in the top of the fourth extended Miami's lead to 8-3. Buffalo's offense struggled to find a rhythm as they didn't manage to score another run the rest of the game. The RedHawks added insurance runs in the top of the seventh on 2-RBI single to make it 10-3.
Terwilliger and Allen finished with three hits each. Allen finished with two RBIs.
GAME 2
It was déjà vu for the RedHawks in the second game as they got out to a 2-0 lead with a sac fly and a solo home run. Buffalo cut Miami's lead in half as Bri Delaney hit an RBI single to score Reagan Terwilliger.
Miami's offense found their groove in the third inning as back-to-back singles with runners on base pushed their lead to 4-1.
The Bulls didn't trail for long as their offense exploded in the third. Terwilliger started the inning with a walk followed by a single by Allen. Bella Smithson hopped on the wagon with a single of her own to load the bases. Delaney capitalized on the moment with a 2-RBI single to left center. Now trailing 4-3, Abbey Nagel ripped a three-run homer to left center to give the Bulls a 6-4 lead.
Forcing a pitching change, Ava Thelen earned a walk as Delaney Ellis hit a single to put runners on first and second. Tabitha von Kolen loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Emily Gorman hit into a fielder's choice as the RedHawks got the out at the plate. Terwilliger didn't waste time with a 2-RBI double down the right field line to extend their lead to 8-4.
The game stayed at 8-4 until the bottom of the sixth when Nagel hit an RBI single to left center to score Allen. Now leading 9-4 headed to the top of the seventh, Miami didn't go down easy. A lead-off double gave them life. Soon they found themselves with runners on first and second after a walk. The third batter of the inning ripped a single down the left field line to score a run and make it 9-5. With runners back on first and second, a quick double play at third base to across the diamond put the Bulls within one out of victory. A single extended the inning as the RedHawks now had runners on the corners. An infield pop out ended the game as the Bulls got out of the late jam.
The Bulls outhit the RedHawks, 14-8, as Delaney went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Allen and Nagel each had a pair of RBIs. Genevieve Longsdorf earned the win tossing 6.2 innings with one earned run.
