BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (14-18, 5-4 MAC) closed the week out with a split doubleheader against the Bowling Green Falcons (15-14, 3-6 MAC) on Saturday evening. The Bulls won the first game, 7-4, before falling in the final game of the series, 9-1.
Buffalo has now won nine of their last 13. On the week, they went 4-1 as they swept Canisius on Wednesday afternoon.
GAME 2
The second game of the series started with a blast as Emily Gorman led off with a solo shot to right center. The Falcons made it a game in the bottom of the third as they managed to string together three consecutive hits along with a double steal to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Buffalo tied the game as Abbey Nagel hit an RBI single to score Nicole Allen. After shutting down the Falcons in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulls' offense started to roll in the fifth. A lead-off walk by Ava Thelen snowballed into an avalanche of offense. Gorman doubled down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. Reagan Terwilliger reached base on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Allen then singled up the middle to score Gorman. With Terwilliger on third, Bella Smithson hit a sac fly to center to score Terwilliger and extend Buffalo's lead to 4-2.
Headed to the seventh, the Bulls still led 4-2, but they added three insurance runs. A lead-off single by Gorman followed by Allen reaching base on an error put runners on first and second. Smithson ripped an RBI double to right field with a shot off the wall to score Gorman and extended the lead to 5-2. Bri Delaney joined the hit parade as she singled up the middle to score both Smithson and Allen.
Leading 7-2, the Bulls looked to close out the game, but the Falcons had other plans. They led the inning off with a walk, but back-to-back fly outs put the Bulls in position to take the win. Another walk put runners on first and second. A two-out RBI single cut Buffalo's lead to 7-3. Another RBI single to left field made it 7-4. Forcing a pitching change, Genevieve Longsdorf halted the Falcon's as she struck out the lone batter she faced as the Bulls won the game and series, 7-4.
Gorman was 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Both Smithson and Delaney had a pair of RBIs. Taking home the win in the circle was Malena Toth as she tossed 4.0 innings. She allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three Falcons.
GAME 3
It was a tough go for the Bulls in the final game of the series as they looked for their first sweep over the Falcons since 2023. The bats came alive for Bowling Green as they outhit the Bulls, 11-5.
The Bulls went down in order to start the game allowing the Falcons to take the early lead. A single to right with an error put the runner in scoring position. Bowling Green didn't waste any time to take advantage of the situation as the following batter ripped an RBI single in the hole. They added to their lead on a double steal to go up 2-0 after the first.
The score remained 2-0 until the fourth when the Falcons added three runs on a three-run home run to make it 5-0. In the fifth inning, a 2-RBI single pushed their lead to 7-0.
Buffalo got on the board in the sixth inning as Bri Delaney hit an RBI double to left scoring Nicole Allen. In the bottom half of the inning, a bases loaded walk made it 8-1. After a pitching change, an RBI single ended the game as Bowling Green denied the Bulls a series sweep with a 9-1 win.
Allen went 2-for-3 with a double in the game.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday when they host the Niagara Purple Eagles (0-15, 0-8 MAAC) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Nan Harvey Field.
