
Bulls Sweep Northern Illinois, 7-0

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team got back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon as the Bulls defeated Northern Illinois, 7-0, picking up their 12th win of the season and first in Mid-American Conference play.
The Bulls won the doubles point beginning with a 6-4 victory at third doubles courtesy of Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou and Gabriella Akopyan. Buffalo then clinched the point at first doubles as Pia Schwarz and Azra Deniz Comlek overcame an early deficit, winning 7-5.
Despite the dominance on the final scoreboard, singles play was tight throughout. Schwarz opened the scoring with a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles and the Bulls extended their lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at third singles from Akopyan.
The final four matches all went to a third set including the match clincher from Comlek at fifth singles as she overcame a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-0. At second singles, Hsin-Yuan Shih also dropped her first set, but went on to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the final two matches, sophomore Mariana Carvajal Torres won 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-4 and Ambre Amat also went three sets, winning 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (5).
The Bulls remain home next Friday when they host Toledo at 1pm.
