ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University at Buffalo softball team fell to UTEP 5-3 in extra innings in the opening game of the Lobo Classic, hosted by New Mexico, on Thursday night.
Junior Brianna Castro put the Bulls on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left field to give UB an early lead.
Sophomore Julia Tarantino held the Miners to just one hit through five innings, but they broke through in the top of the sixth with a pair of RBI singles to give UTEP a 2-1 lead.
Buffalo answered in the bottom of the inning as Alexis Lucyshyn singled up the middle and later, Castro came up big again, this time with an RBI double to right center field to tie the game at two.
UTEP threatened with runners on the corners in the top of the seventh but Tarantino and the UB defense got a big groundout to end the inning and escape the jam.
The Bulls put two on in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to plate a run and that would prove to be costly as UTEP scored three runs on an RBI double and a pair of RBI fly outs to take a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth. The Bulls had their shot at a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning as Castro singled to center, but they would get no closer as the comeback fell short.
Castro led UB at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI while Lucyshyn also recorded a multi-hit game.
Buffalo returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader beginning with a game against Tarleton State at 12pm and followed by a contest against North Dakota State at 2:30pm.
