MIAMI, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team split a pair of games to open the 2022 season at the Panther Invitational on Friday. The Bulls defeated Cleveland State 4-1 in the first game of the day, before falling to the hosts, Florida International, 4-3 in game two.
In game one, Cleveland State struck first as they scored on an RBI single in the top of the first to take an early lead, but the Bulls turned an inning ending double play to limit the damage.
After allowing just one hit over the next three innings, Buffalo broke though in the bottom of the fourth as Rachel Steffan drew a walk and then stole second before Alexis Lucyshyn blasted a two-run home run to left field to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
The Bulls added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as Madison Fernimen drew a walk and Olivia Kincanon followed with a single to right field before Brianna Castro singled to left to score Fernimen and Kincanon scored on a throwing error by the CSU first baseman to put UB up 4-1 and that would be all they would need as the UB defense came up big again, turning a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Lucyshyn got the win, allowing just one run on seven hits in a complete game effort.
In game two, FIU scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the first and would add another in the second to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fifth as UB scored two runs on a pair of FIU errors to tie the game, but the Panthers answered with a sac fly RBI in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, 3-2.
FIU threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth but Julia Tarantino and the UB defense got a big groundout to end the inning. Buffalo's offense capitalized off the momentum as Alexis Matheney led off with a single and Fernimen followed with an RBI double to left to tie the game at three, but the Bulls left two baserunners stranded and that would prove to be costly as the Panthers scored the decisive fourth run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
