BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (2-4, 0-0 MAC) looks to make it two in a row and get their first win at Alumni Arena as they host LIU on Saturday at 2pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Brian Koziol (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the first meeting between the two schools. The Bulls competed against LIU Brooklyn in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, splitting the matchups. LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post merged its programs into a single Division I program in 2018. UB is 1-0 against the NEC this season with a win over Stonehill on November 14.
UB showed poise and resiliency down the stretch as they snapped a three-game losing streak with a win at Big 4 foe Niagara on Wednesday. Fifth year guards Jazmine Young and Zakiyah Winfield led the Bulls with 17 points each while Re'Shawna Stone also scored in double figures with 12 points. Winfield leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 13.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Young is also averaging in double figures at 11.8 points per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in 3FG defense (26.8) while also ranking in the top half in scoring defense (60.8), field goal defense (39.2) rebounding defense (36.7) and blocks per game (2.3).
The LIU Sharks are 2-7 overall after falling to Iona 64-55 on Monday night. The Sharks finished the 2021-22 season with a 9-18 overall record and a 9-9 conference mark, falling to Wagner in the first round of the NEC Tournament. LIU was selected to finish seventh in the NEC Preseason Poll. The Sharks are 1-0 against the MAC this season as they defeated Ohio in Athens in the season-opener. Reigning NEC Rookie of the Year and Preseason All-NEC selection Emaia O'Brien leads the Sharks in scoring at 11.9 ppg while adding 2.3 rpg and 2.0 apg. Ashley Austin is also averaging in double figures at 10.7 points per contest. The Sharks return just one of their top five scorers from a year ago in O'Brien. The Sharks are one of the youngest teams in the country with eight true freshmen on their roster.
Up next, Buffalo will have a 10-day break for finals week before welcoming the Bucknell Bison to Alumni Arena on Tuesday, December 20 at 6pm.
As a reminder, the Buffalo women's basketball team is running a crowdfunding campaign through December 20 to raise money for various portable equipment that will help the players recover more quickly and efficiency between practices and competition. To donate, click here.
