BUFFALO, NY β After a 10-day break, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team (3-4, 0-0 MAC) looks to extend their win streak to three games as they welcome the Bucknell Bison to Alumnia Arena on Tuesday night.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 14th overall meeting between Buffalo and Bucknell with the Bulls owning a slim 7-6 series advantage. The Bison defeated the Bulls 80-69 at Sojka Pavilion exactly one year ago.
UB dominated from start to finish as they cruised to a 91-59 victory over LIU on December 10 for their first home win of the season. It was a balanced offensive effort as four Bulls scored in double figures led by fifth year guards Jazmine Young and Zakiyah Winfield who scored a game-high 20 points. Fifth year's Re'Shawna Stone and Kiara Johnson also had big nights, scoring 17 points each, both UB career-highs. Winfield leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 14.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and has recorded five double-doubles on the season. Young has set new UB career-highs in back-to-back games and is averaging 13.0 points and 2.1 assists per contest. Stone is also averaging in double figures at 10.9 points per game while also adding 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest. The Bulls rank in the top half of the MAC in scoring defense (60.8), field goal defense (39.2), 3FG defense (26.8) field goal percentage (42.5) and rebounding defense (36.7).
The Bucknell Bison are 4-6 overall after falling at Penn 68-62 on December 6. Bucknell finished 24-10 overall and 12-6 in Patriot League play last season. The Bison reached the 2022 Patriot League Championship game, falling 65-54 to No. 2 seed American. They received an at-large bid to the 2022 WNIT and defeated Fordham in the first round before falling to Drexel in the second. The Bison were selected to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Preseason All-Patriot League selection Cecelia Collins leads the Bison in scoring at 13.4 ppg while adding 3.7 rpg and 3.3 apg. Emma Shaffer is also averaging in double figures at 10.1 ppg while also leading the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg). The Bison have had one of the best scoring defenses in the country, leading the Patriot League in two of the last three seasons. 47 of Bucknell's last 61 wins have been by double digits. Since the start of the 2018-19 season, 69 of the team's 88 wins have been by a double-digit margin.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, December 28 for the final game of non-conference play. Tipoff from the Reilly Center is set for 4pm.
As a reminder, the Buffalo women's basketball team is running a crowdfunding campaign through December 20 to raise money for various portable equipment that will help the players recover more quickly and efficiency between practices and competition. To donate, click here.
