BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 MAC) defeated the Patriot League preseason favorite Colgate Raiders (0-1, 0-0 Patriot League) on Monday night, 88-87.
Four Bulls finished with double figures with Zid Powell leading the way with 24. Sophomore Curtis Jones notched 17 points with Isaiah Adams (13) and Armoni Foster (11) rounding out the top-scorers. At the half, Powell only had five points, he would shoot 6-for-8 in the second half. Jonnivius Smith snatched eight boards, tied for the game high with Braeden Smith of Colgate.
It was a back-and-forth game as there were 28 lead changes and 12 ties. Colgate's largest lead was seven with just under 13:00 left in regulation. The Bulls led by five at the 10:08 mark in the first half. At the final media timeout in the first half, Buffalo led by one at 36-35, but the Raiders took a three point at the half.
Trailing 41-38 at halftime, Buffalo turned it on in the second half shooting 61.3%. Out of the break, the Bulls attacked the paint as their first four baskets in the second half came from the high percentage zone. Down 54-47 with 12:47 left in regulation, Powell drilled a three-pointer and would then take the Bulls down the court to make a layup. Adams then hit an open three to give the Bulls a 55-54 lead.
In just the final four minutes of the game, there were 27 points scored. UB trailed 82-81 with 1:09 left, but off a C. Jones jumper, the Bulls gained an 83-82 lead and never looked back. With 7-seconds left, Colgate made two free throws, and were then forced to foul off the inbounds. C. Jones extended the lead to 87-84, but Colgate would throw away their inbounds pass that gave the Bulls the ball back with 6-seconds left. LaQuill Hardnett iced the game after making one of two free throws. The Raiders went down the court and made a three with no time left as the Bulls were victorious by one.
"Our guys fought, kept coming, and stayed after it," stated Head Coach Jim Whitesell after Monday night's victory. "Zid Powell showed his will out there, Curt Jones had a blue collar night tonight. Collectively as a group we had really good contributions. Devin Ceaser came off the bench and did some nice things. It was a big team win as we have a tough James Madison team coming in on Saturday. They're a mid-major top-25 program that beat Virginia last year. I was really happy with our effort and competitiveness, they're a team that can hurt you in so many ways."
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host James Madison.
