BUFFALO, N.Y. – University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (18-12, 10-8 MAC) will face off against the No. 3-seed Ohio Bobcats (19-10, 13-5 MAC) in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament. The match is set for Sunday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in Muncie, Ind. as Ball State is this year's No. 1-seed and host.
The Bulls clinched the No. 6-seed in dramatic fashion on Wednesday evening. Buffalo swept Akron on Senior Night, but the team had to wait for the outcome between Northern Illinois at Western Michigan. With Northern Illinois heading into the match with a 10-7 MAC record, the Bulls needed Western Michigan to pull off the win. The Broncos took the first set, but would then drop sets two and three. With hope dwindling, Western Michigan took the fourth set, 25-17. It all came down the decisive fifth set where the Broncos won, 15-8.
The Bulls and Bobcats split their season series in Athens, Ohio in mid-October. Both matches went five sets. The Bulls had a chance to sweep the Bobcats as the second match's fifth set was high scoring with Ohio taking it, 21-19.
This will be the 13th time Buffalo has made the MAC Tournament dating back to the 1998 season. 2019 was the last time the Bulls made the tournament, Head Coach Scott Smith's first season at the helm. In that season, the Bulls fell to Bowling Green in the quarterfinals. Buffalo, however, did defeat Akron in the pre-quarterfinals that season. All-time, Buffalo is 6-12 in the MAC Tournament. They picked up their first win in 2009 against Kent State.
The Bulls finished the season with Mandy Leigh earning MAC East Setter of the Week four times, Emma Gielas was MAC East Offensive Player of the Week twice, as Maria Futey was MAC East Defensive Player of the Week once. Tomorrow, the MAC will announce this season's All-MAC honors.
