Bulls Sweep Akron on Senior Night, Advance to MAC Tournament

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team closed out the regular season in style Wednesday night, sweeping Akron at Alumni Arena, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19. And thanks to Western Michigan defeating Northern Illinois, the Bulls secured the sixth seed in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Bulls dominated the Zips in nearly every statistical category. UB led in kills (46-35), aces (5-3), blocks (8-4), assists (45-32) and digs (72-58).
In the opening set, the Bulls had 15 kills compared to Akron's 14. But the big difference was the hit percentage as UB hit .317 compared to just .184 for the Zips.
In the second set, the Bulls had 14 kills and held Akron to a .067 hit percentage, its worst of the evening.
Buffalo had a match-high 17 kills in set three to finish off the Zips.
Emma Gielas led the Bulls in kills with 12, followed by Cali Assaley and Abby Leigh who each had seven. Katrin Trebichavska led UB in both aces and digs with 2 and 18, respectively. Olivia DeBortoli had five blocks to lead the Bulls and Mandy Leigh had a team-best 19 assists.
Following the match, the Bulls honored four seniors playing their final match at Alumni Arena. Cali Assaley, Jenna Sonnenberg, Emma Puzausky and Olivia DeBortoli were all honored.
Buffalo finished the regular season 18-12 overall and 10-8 in MAC play. The Bulls are the sixth seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. They will travel to Ball State and face third-seeded Ohio on Sunday evening at 7 pm.
