Bulls to Face Nationally Ranked UConn on Tuesday Night

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 MAC) will play the nationally ranked UConn Huskies (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) on Tuesday evening. The Huskies come in at No. 25 in the AP Top-25 poll receiving 124 points. In the Coaches Poll, UConn came in at No. 28 as they received 46 points. The game can be watched on CBS Sports Network with tip-off starting at 7 p.m. from the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
The Bulls are coming off a tough loss to the 3-0 James Madison Dukes on Saturday afternoon. In the loss, Buffalo was able to get 16 steals off the Dukes. Through two games, Buffalo ranks fifth in the nation in steals averaging 14.5. Only Bryant (19.0), Morgan State (16.3), UNLV (15.0), and UT Arlington (15.0) average more. Leading the way is Zid Powell who is first in the MAC averaging 4.50 steals per game, as LaQuill Hardnett is eighth with 2.50.
This will be the second time under Head Coach Jim Whitesell's guidance that the Bulls will face the Huskies. On Nov. 21, 2019, at the Charleston Classic, the Bulls opened the tournament with a close loss to UConn, 79-68. Buffalo is 1-8 all-time against the Huskies with their lone win coming on Dec. 27, 1951 by a score of 65-58. All-time, UB is 5-15 against BIG EAST teams. The last time the Bulls defeated a BIG EAST program was on Dec. 4, 2019, as they took down DePaul on the road, 74-68.
Heading into the game, sophomore guard Curtis Jones is eighth in the MAC in field goal percentage. Jones is shooting .500 on the early season. He is also first in free throw percentage as he's perfect on the season.
Following the game, the Bulls will stay out and travel to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam Tournament. Buffalo will face Drake on Friday at 1 p.m. EST.
