CLEVELAND, OH – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team continued fall action this weekend at the Cleveland State Invitational. The weekend was highlighted by Simon Wibler and Finn Macnamara winning the doubles title while Wibler also advanced to the finals in the singles competition.
The Bulls had success in doubles action as it was an all-UB final. Yu-Shiang Huang and Cheng Tang won their opening match 6-4 before defeating Youngstown State 6-3 in the Round of 16. They then defeated Holy Cross in a tight match, 7-6 (3) before defeating the hosts 7-5 in the semifinals to set up a match against their teammates. On the other side of the bracket Wibler and Macnamara received an opening round bye and then won three matches to reach the finals where they came away with a 6-4 victory.
Also competing in doubles action was Theodoros Mitsakos who teamed with Youngstown State's Ibanez to win three matches before falling to Wibler/Macnamara in the semifinals. Daniils Snaiders and Greg Hastings received an opening round bye and won their first match before falling 6-4 in the Round of 16.
Seven Bulls competed in singles action. Wibler continued to have success as, after an opening round bye, he won four straight matches to reach the finals before a three-set battle 3-6, 7-5, 10-6. Three Bulls reached the quarterfinal round as Tang won two matches before dropping a three-set match 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Snaiders also won a pair of matches before falling 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 16. MacNamara won his opening match before falling 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-7 in the round of 32 and Hastings also won his opening match before falling 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
"This weekend was a successful one for our team on numerous fronts," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We played disciplined, energetic doubles from start to finish. Our mentality in singles was as good as it has ever been. Even though Simon came up short in the singles finals I couldn't be more excited about the consistency of his performances over the fall. He and Finn are proving to be a major threat in doubles as well. We have a lot of good things to build on going into the final event of the fall. Go Bulls!"
Buffalo will conclude the fall season this upcoming weekend when they head to Kalamazoo, MI for the MAC Singles and Doubles Invite.
