ATHENS, Ohio – The University at Buffalo cross country team participated in the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday morning. The men's team finished fourth with a score of 111. The women's team finished 11th with 292 points.
Vassi Klock was UB's top finisher in the women's 6K, placing 46th with a time of 22:15.7. Paris Welker finished 49th in 22:19.5. Lexi Bernard (67th place, 22:49.7), Chloe Freeland (72nd place, 22:59.1), and Brianna Urban (88th place, 23:46.1) rounded out the top-five for the Bulls. Also competing for the Bulls were Meghana Caron (95th place, 24:01.9), Elizabeth Powers (98th place, 24:38.8), and Allison Newton (99th place, 24:47.5).
"The women went into MAC championships as a very young and inexperienced team. The freshmen ran their first ever 6K race," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "The plan was to move up each two kilometers of the race, which they did well. While 11th place isn't impressive, this group has progressed significantly throughout the season and will continue to improve. We are building a strong base to move forward each season."
In the men's 8K, Ryan Buzby finished in fifth place with a time of 23:48.0. Sean O'Brien claimed 22nd place in 24:31.5. The rest of UB's top-five finishers included William Marchant (25th place, 24:42.1), Evan Hilbert (29th place, 24:53.5), and Matt Gensel (32nd place, 25:04.0). Also competing for the Bulls were Noah Brightman (33rd place, 25:08.6), Cory Demo (35th place, 25:12.3), Ty Fluharty (39th place, 25:19.5), and Alex Hislop (56th place, 26:06.8).
Buzby's 8K finish was a personal best and the fastest 8K time in UB history. Buzby earned First Team All-MAC following the race.
"This team raced tough over the second half. We definitely outperformed our ranking coming into this championship," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "We are incredibly proud of this squad. The men executed the plan near perfectly, and their team finish showed."
