
Wibler Leads Bulls to Success at ITA Regionals

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team competed at the ITA Northeast Regionals this past weekend, a performance that was highlighted by a run to the singles Round of 16 by fifth year Simon Wibler.
After receiving a first-round bye, Wibler won his opening match on Saturday 6-0, 6-4 and then continued his run on Sunday, winning 7-5, 7-6 to before coming up just short in his final match of the weekend, falling 6-4, 6-4.
Also in singles action, two Bulls got started on Friday with qualifier action as Theodoros Mitsakos won his opening match in qualifiers 6-4, 6-2 before falling 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. Finn Macnamara and Daniils Snaiders also competed in the qualifiers but dropped their opening matches.
Sophomore Cheng Tang received a bye in the first round and then won his first match 6-2, 6-3 before falling 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday.
In doubles play, all UB doubles teams received first round byes. Snaiders and Mitsakos won their first match 8-5 before dropping their second match 8-3 while Wibler and Macnamara also won their opening match 8-4 before falling 8-6 on Sunday. Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang lost 8-6 in their lone match of the weekend.
"We saw some good things this weekend but ultimately, we have to get better at competing in big moments," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We had matches on our racquet and didn't execute. We will set some good goals the next few weeks to accomplish before we go to Cleveland."
The Bulls return to action October 28-30 at the Cleveland State Invitational.
