BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – University at Buffalo junior guard Dyaisha Fair scored a career-high 40 points to power the Bulls to an 82-66 win over Bowling Green at the Stroh Center on Wednesday night.
Fair's career mark came on a career-high 14 made field goals, including 6-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Summer Hemphill recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds while also tying a career-high with four blocked shots and Dominique Camp scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points.
Bowling Green hit a pair of threes to take an early lead, but the Bulls locked down on defense and got going in transition as they used a 10-0 run to take a 14-6 lead and force a BG timeout at the 4:22 mark. The Falcons used a 6-0 run to cut the UB lead to four late in the quarter before Loren Christie found Adebola Adeyeye on the block who powered up for two and the Bulls led 18-15 at the end of the first.
The Bulls locked down on defense, holding the Falcons without a field goal for three minutes, and used a 6-0 run to take a 24-17 lead early in the second quarter. Buffalo continued to attack as Camp and Fair put together a 7-0 run on three straight transition baskets to put UB up 31-19 at the media timeout. The Bulls extended their run to 23-4 on a pair of triples from Fair and Camp and a bucket by Hemphill to take a 41-21 lead with just under two minutes to go and they would take a 43-21 lead at the break.
The Bulls held Bowling Green to six points in the second quarter, the second fewest by a UB opponent this season, while the Buffalo offense shot a blistering 64% from the floor, including 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Hemphill and Fair continued to attack to start the third quarter, but the Falcons used a 5-0 run in just over a minute to cut the lead to 49-33 at the media timeout. BG extended the run to 10-0 while holding UB without a field goal for three minutes before Fair hit a spot up triple to put UB up 52-38 at the 2:28 mark. Fair continued to do her thing as she hit a step back long two and later found Hemphill with a beautiful pass to give the Bulls a 61-43 lead at the end of the third.
The two teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter before Fair knocked down her fourth three of the game to put UB up 67-47 at the 7:14 mark. Bowling Green scored on four straight possessions to cut the UB lead to 67-56 at the 5:30 mark before Fair hit a big triple at the end of the shot clock to stop the run and put UB up 73-58 with just over four minutes to play. Buffalo continued to impress with their ball movement as Georgia Woolley found Hemphill who hit Adeyeye on the block for an easy two to give the Bulls a 79-63 lead and that would seal the victory for UB.
"Dyaisha was locked in from shootaround," said Felisha. "She remembered that this is the team that ended our season last year and she took this game personally. The neat thing is that although she scored 40 points and did some great things, the leadership of Summer was second to none. She led us with her poise and kept us locked into our purpose and I think today was a great win."
Buffalo is now 86-10 since 2016-17 when holding opponents to under 70 points and are 144-9 when tied or leading with five minutes to play. The Bulls won the battle on the glass, 44-33, including a combined 17 from Adeyeye and Christie, while scoring 28 points in the paint and 16 points off of 14 BG turnovers.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to host Kent State on Saturday, January 8. Tipoff at Alumni Arena is set for 1pm.
