BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team begins their much anticipated 2021 season this weekend as the Bulls head east on I-90 for the Syracuse Invitational.
The Bulls begin action on Friday at 11am against the host Orange, followed by two matches on Saturday. UB faces Albany on Saturday at 11am and then will conclude the weekend on Saturday at 3pm against UConn.
Buffalo returns 13 players from last year's squad while adding three newcomers to the mix. Leading the returning charge on offense are sophomores Milla Malik and Emma Gielas, UB's top two leaders in kills last year. Malik was already named a preseason All-MAC selection, while finishing last year second-team All-MAC. Gielas added 222 kills on the year, finishing second on the team.
A pair of middle blockers that saw plenty of action last year return in juniors Abby Leigh and Courtney Okwara. Leigh played a number of different spots for UB last season, seeing action in 58 sets. Okwara played in all 78 sets as a middle blocker, finishing with 122 kills.
Defensively, all three of Buffalo's defensive specialists return led by junior Jenna Sonnenberg who had a career high 299 digs last season. Senior Paige Beck also comes back for her fourth year after chipping in 89 digs last year and sophomore Emilie Davis, who was used mostly as a serving specialist, also returns.
At the setter position, the Bulls return senior Kyndal Bacon, who played in all 78 sets last season, finishing with 679 assists. They also bring back junior Emma Puzausky, who played in seven matches. UB welcomes in freshman Mandy Leigh, the sister of junior Abby Leigh, who will bolster the spot.
Also returning this upcoming season are middle blockers Olivia DeBortoli and Lauren Valentic, who played in nine and three sets, respectively, and sophomore right side Stacia Gollogly, who saw action in 19 matches with 28 kills.
Two more freshmen add into the mix with Leigh's high school teammate Maria Futey, who will see action on the outside, and Farmington, NY native Hannah Jacoby, who comes to the Bulls as a defensive specialist.
Friday's game against Syracuse will air on ACC Network Extra, while all three matches will have live stats. All links can be found at UBBulls.com.
