BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo swimming and diving standout Brittney Beetcher earned the nomination as UB's 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year.
Candidates are nominated based on academic success, athletic accomplishments and active leadership in the community. The Mid-American Conference's senior woman administrators will select two of the nominees submitted by member institutions to represent the conference as 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year finalists.
Beecher, who earned the Clifford C. Furnas Award, the highest academic honored bestowed on a Buffalo student-athlete, led the UB swimming and diving program to its first Mid-American Conference championship in school history. She was named the MAC's Outstanding Senior, while taking home All-MAC First Team honors as well. Following the season, she was named to the league's All-Academic team.
One of the most prestigious NCAA awards, the Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 31st year, it honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
After conferences determine their representatives, the Woman of the Year selection committee, comprising representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the top 10 honorees from each of the NCAA's three divisions. Later, the committee selects the top three individuals from each division, and the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics chooses the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine student-athletes. The winner will be announced in the fall.
