ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team split its doubleheader to conclude the series at Ohio on Saturday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field. The Bulls fell 12-5 in game one before taking game two 12-8.
Ohio got out to a fast start in game one, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 6-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The Bulls chipped away in the top of the second as Anna Aguon ripped a two-out two-run double to the wall in left field to cut the lead to 6-2.
The Bobcats would add to their lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on three hits to take a 10-2 lead.
Buffalo would extend the game in the top of the fifth as Alexis Matheney and Alexis Lucyshyn reocorded back-to-back RBI to cut the lead to 10-4 and they would add another run in the sixth as Rachel Steffan lined an RBI double to left but the Bobcats would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the 12-5 victory.
Matheney got the Bulls going in game two as she blasted a two-run home run to straightaway center field in the top of the first to give UB an early 2-0 lead and Buffalo would add to that lead in the second as Aguon continued her hot hitting with a two-run double to right center field to put the Bulls up 4-0.
Ohio cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning but Matheney answered in a big way in the top of the third with her second two-run home run of the game to almost the same spot in center field to put UB up 6-3. Olivia Kincanon would add to the UB lead as she took the first pitch of the at bat for a two-run single to right field to give the Bulls an 8-3 lead.
Buffalo would then add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-4 lead. Ohio answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the sixth to cut the lead back to two but Kincanon delivered the dagger in the top of the seventh as she drilled a two run home run to right to give the Bulls the 12-8 victory.
UB concludes the regular season next weekend with a four-game series against Ball State at Nan Harvey Field beginning on Friday, May 14 at 3pm.
