ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team split their series-opening doubleheader at Ohio on Friday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field. The Bulls defeated the Bobcats 7-5 in game one before falling 8-3 in game two.
The Bulls struck quickly in game one as Rachel Steffan blasted a two-run shot in the top of the first to give UB an early 2-0 lead.
Buffalo added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Anna Aguon drilled a solo shot over the wall in right center field to put the Bulls up 3-1.
The Bobcats answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2 and threatened again with a runner in scoring position in the fourth but Ally Marcano recorded back-to-back outs to end the inning and escape the jam.
Ohio would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single before the Bulls retook the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Madison Fernimen to put UB up 4-3. Buffalo would then seal the game in the top of the seventh as Steffan hit her second two-run home run of the game and Alexis Matheney followed with a double and later scored on an Ohio error to give the Bulls a 7-3 lead.
The Bobcats looked to rally in the bottom of the inning as they scored two runs on a hit and a UB error but sophomore Alexis Lucyshyn came on in relief and the Buffalo defense stepped up big, turning a game-ending double play to secure the victory.
Marcano picked up the win, giving up just three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three batters in 6.1 innings of work, while Lucyshyn collected her second save of the season.
Ohio would strike first in game two on a solo home run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Steffan would answer in the top of the second with her third home run of the day, another two run shot, to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two run home run and would break the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits and two UB errors to take an 8-2 lead through five innings of play.
The Bulls chipped away at the lead in the top of the sixth as Aguon blasted a solo home run to cut the lead to 8-3 but the rally would fall short as UB was unable to plate another run.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1pm.
