Bulls Fall to Northern Illinois 7-5 on Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team fell to Northern Illinois 7-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field.
The Bulls struck first as Alicia Peters smacked a double to the wall in right field, Rachel Steffan singled through the left side and Alexis Matheney followed with a line drive at the second baseman to score Peters and give UB an early 1-0 lead. Later with the bases loaded, Madison Fernimen drove in a run with a sac fly to right field to put UB up 2-0 at the end of the first.
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the second as Sam Mallinder hit a solo home run to left center field to cut the lead to 2-1. Later, NIU would put another runner in scoring position but Olivia Kincanon fired a great throw to third base to get the runner and limit the damage.
The Bulls added to their lead in the bottom of the third as Matheney and Alexis Lucyshyn recorded back-to-back singles and later, Brianna Castro smacked a two-RBI single to right center field to give the Bulls a 4-1 lead. UB would then get another run on a double steal to take a 5-1 lead.
Northern Illinois answered in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on five hits and a UB error to tie the game at five. The Huskies then broke the tie in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI single to take a 7-5 lead.
Castro kept the deficit to just two runs as she made a great play on a line drive to short and then got the runner at second for the inning ending double play but the Bulls were unable to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game.
The Bulls return to action with a four game series at Ohio beginning on Friday, May 7 at 3pm.
