BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a doubleheader against Ball State on Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls fell 7-4 in game one before dropping game two 9-0.
Senior Anna Aguon got the Bulls going early as she led off with a double to the wall in right center field and a few batters later, Alexis Matheney drilled a two-run home run into UB Stadium to give UB an early 2-0 lead.
The Buffalo defense would flash some leather as Madison Fernimen made a great play at second base to compete the inning ending double play and then in the third inning, Olivia Kincanon came up throwing to get the runner at second to end the inning.
The Cardinals tied the game at two in the top of the fifth on a two-run single but the Bulls would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning as Kincanon drilled a line drive solo home run over the wall in straightaway center field to put UB up 3-2.
The Bulls would load the bases once again in the bottom of the sixth on a trio of free passes but would be unable to plate a run and that would prove to be costly as the Cardinals scored five runs on three hits to take a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh and that would be all they would need to secure the victory.
The Ball State bats would stay red hot in game two as the Cardinals scored seven runs on six hits to take an early lead and that would be all they would need as the UB offense managed just two hits on the game.
The series will conclude with a single game starting at 12pm on Sunday.
