BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team came up short, falling to Ball State 11-8 in the season finale at Nan Harvey Field on Sunday afternoon.
Ball State struck first as they loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on a two-out RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulls would answer in the bottom of the inning as Anna Aguon drew a leadoff walk and Rachel Steffan singled to left to set up Alexis Matheney who blasted a three-run home run over the wall in left center field to give UB a 3-2 lead.
Sophomore Alexis Lucyshyn would help her cause in the bottom of the third inning as she drilled a line drive over the wall in straightaway center field for a three-run home run to give UB a 6-4 lead.
Ball State threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth but Matheney flashed some leather as she made a fantastic diving catch in center field and then fired to second base to get the baserunner and complete the inning ending double play.
The Bulls then added to their lead in the bottom of the inning as Aguon doubled to left and Alicia Peters followed with a single up the middle to set up Rachel Steffan who lined an RBI single to left. UB would then record their fourth straight hit as Matheney drilled an RBI double to the wall in left center field to give Buffalo an 8-5 lead through four innings of play.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a UB error and a pair of singles and Gabby Magnifico made the Bulls pay as she hit a grand slam to center field to give Ball State the lead and they added two more runs on a UB error to take an 11-8 lead.
Buffalo got two runners on base in the bottom of the inning but the rally would fall short as they were unable to plate a run.
