BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team swept Kent State in a midweek doubleheader at Nan Harvey Field on Wednesday. The Bulls defeated the Golden Flashes 4-2 in game one before setting a new single-game program record with five home runs in a 7-2 win in game two.
After a slow start to the game one for both teams, Kent State would get on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls would answer in the bottom of the inning as Anna Aguon doubled to right field and Rachel Steffan smacked a two-RBI single to right to give UB a 2-1 lead.
An hour-long weather delay wouldn't cool the Bulls' bats as Madison Fernimen drilled a solo home run to straightaway center field to put UB up 3-1 through four innings of play.
Buffalo would add to their lead as Aguon led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to left center and later, Steffan would line an RBI double to the wall in right field to give the Bulls a 4-1 lead.
Kent State would cut the lead to two on an RBI single in the top of the seventh but the rally would fall short as Ally Sobaszek made a great catch on a hard hit ball to right field for the final out of the game.
Ally Marcano picked up the win as she gave up just one earned run on five hits in a complete game effort.
In game two, Aguon would continue her lead off magic as she blasted a solo home run over the left field wall and off UB Stadium to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
UB starter Alexis Lucyshyn would start to find her groove in the third as she recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the half inning and the Bulls would help her out in the bottom of the inning as Steffan drilled a solo home run over the wall in straightaway center field to give UB a 2-1 lead.
The long ball would continue to power the Bulls in the bottom of the fourth as Brianna Castro blasted a solo home run off UB Stadium in left field to put UB up 3-1. Two batters later, Aguon stepped up to the plate and drilled a two-out solo home run to straightaway center field to give the Bulls a 4-1 lead and force a Kent State pitching change.
The Golden Flashes would cut the deficit to two in the top of the fifth on an RBI single but Castro made a great play at shortstop and applied the tag for the final out to limit the damage.
Buffalo added to their lead in the fifth as Alexis Matheney crushed a two-run home run to right center field to give the Bulls a 6-2 lead and they would get one more on a Kent State error to go up 7-2.
The Bulls flashed some leather in the top of the sixth as UB turned the 6-4-3 double play to end the half inning and escape the jam and that would be all they would need to secure the sweep.
Lucyshyn picked up her third straight win as she gave up just two runs while striking out four batters in a complete game effort.
Buffalo continues the homestand with a four-game series against Northern Illinois beginning on Friday, April 30 at 4pm.
