BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Northern Illinois 5-3 in the series opener on a cold and blustery day at Nan Harvey Field on Friday.
The Bulls would strike first as Alexis Matheney led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to straightaway center field to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Alexis Lucyshyn, smacked a single down the right field line and later, Madison Fernimen would line an RBI double to the wall in right center field, scoring Lucyshyn to put UB up 2-0.
The Huskies would get on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single but the Buffalo defense would step up big as Olivia Kincanon made a great throw to pick off the baserunner at second base and on the next pitch, caught the NIU baserunner stealing to end the inning and limit the damage.
The UB offense would capitalize as Anna Aguon led off the bottom of inning with a solo home run to right center field to give Buffalo a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Rachel Steffan flashed some leather in the top of the fourth as she recorded all three outs for UB, including a fantastic diving catch in foul territory.
The Bulls would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Alicia Peters blasted a two-out, two-run home run over the wall in right center field to give UB a 5-1 lead.
The Huskies would claw back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits and a UB error to cut the lead to 5-3 but Lucyshyn came on in relief and fielded a groundball for the final out of the inning to limit the damage and that would be all they would need as the Bulls would retire NIU in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Ally Marcano picked up her second straight win as she gave up just one earned run and struck out four batters in 5.1 innings of work while Lucyshyn picked up her first save of the season, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The series will continue with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
