MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo softball team earned a series split with Central Michigan in record-breaking fashion with a 10-1 win at Margo Jonker Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls came into the day tied for the program's single-season home run record and it didn't take long for them to set a new mark as Anna Aguon led off the game with a solo home run over the wall in left field to give the Bulls their 37th home run of the season and an early 1-0 lead.
The long ball would continue to power the Bulls in the top of the second as Olivia Kincanon blasted a three-run home run, her first of the year, to right field to put UB up 4-0 and force Central Michigan to make a pitching change. The Bulls would continue to pile on as back-to-back walks and a single by Rachel Steffan loaded the bases and Alexis Matheney would capitalize as she ripped a bases clearing double down the left field line to give UB a 7-0 lead. Buffalo starter Alexis Lucyshyn would then help her cause with an RBI single to right to score Matheney and put the Bulls up 8-0.
Matheney would do some more damage in the top of the fourth as she drilled a solo home run over the wall in straightaway center field to give the Bulls a 9-0 lead. The Bulls then added an insurance run in the fifth as Brianna Castro and Kincanon recorded back-to-back singles and Aguon followed with an RBI double to right to put UB up 10-1 and that would be all the Bulls would need as they retired the Chippewas in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
In the circle, Lucyshyn earned her second win in as many days, giving up just one run on four hits in a complete game effort.
Buffalo returns home to open a six-game homestand, beginning with a midweek doubleheader against Kent State on Wednesday, April 28 at 1pm.
