JACKSONVILLE, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team needed only five innings to beat Florida A&M, defeating the Rattlers, 9-1, on Sunday morning on the final day of the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament. The Bulls scored multiple runs in four of the five innings and got solid pitching performances from Ally Marcano and Madelyn Hickingbottom to earn their second straight win.
Buffalo scored three runs in the top of the first inning by playing small ball. An RBI fielder's choice by Alexis Lucyshyn, an RBI single by Alexis Matheney and an RBI groundout by Jenna Richmond accounted for the runs.
After Florida A&M scored in the bottom of the first inning to cut the UB lead to 3-1, the Bulls got RBI singles from Rachel Steffan and Matheney in the top of the third inning to extend UB's lead to 5-1.
Steffen drove in another run when she was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth and Lucyshny followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Bulls' lead to 7-1.
Madison Fernimen hit her second home run of the season, a two run shot, in the top of the fifth to make the score 9-1.
Marcano didn't allow an earned run and gave up only two hits and struck out four over three innings to pick up her first win of the season. Hickingbottom finished the job by not allowing a hit over the final two innings.
Buffalo had nine hits in the game. Steffan, Matheney and Fernimen each had two hits for the Bulls.
UB will return to action on Friday, March 19 when it takes on Akron in the Mid-American Conference opener.
