AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team opened Mid-American Conference play in style as they shut out the Akron Zips 4-0 at Jackson Field on Friday afternoon.
The Bulls were led all day by Ally Marcano, who was wheeling and dealing early as she struck out the side in the bottom of the second.
The Zips threatened in the bottom of the third as they loaded the bases on two hits and a UB error, but Marcano got an infield popup to escape the jam.
Senior Anna Aguon got the Bulls on the board in the top of the fourth as she smacked an RBI single up the middle, scoring Olivia Kincanon, to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo would add to their lead in the top of the sixth as Brianna Castro reached third base on an error by the Zips center fielder and Madison Fernimen followed with an RBI single to give UB a 2-0 lead. A few batters later, Rachel Steffan lined an RBI single to left field to put UB up 3-0 and then some heads up base running by Aguon led to another run to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead and that would be all they would need as Kincanon threw out a Zips batter at second base for the final out of the game to secure the victory.
Marcano had a great day in the circle for UB as she picked up her second win, and first shutout, of the season, giving up just five hits while striking out seven batters and allowing no walks in a complete game effort.
Buffalo returns to Jackson Field on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
