AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team split its doubleheader at Akron on Saturday. The Bulls fell 3-0 in game one before defeating the Zips 7-2 in game two of the day at Jackson Field.
In game one, the Bulls had the first scoring chance of the game as they loaded the bases in the top of the third on a single by Olivia Kincanon and a pair of Zips errors but UB was unable to plate a run.
Buffalo threatened again in the top of the fifth as Ally Sobaszek and Anna Aguon reached on singles but poor base running ended the half inning and that would prove to be costly as Akron scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Zips would add an insurance run on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and that would be all they would need as the Bulls went down in order to end the game.
Sophomore Madelyn Hickingbottom gave up three runs on five hits, while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.
It was the Bulls who struck first in game two as Alexis Lucyshyn reached on a fielder's choice to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
Later, trailing 2-1 in the top of the third, singles by Rachel Steffan, Lucyshyn and Alicia Peters loaded the bases and Alexis Matheney capitalized, lining an RBI single to left to tie the game at two. A couple batters later, Kincanon would smack an RBI single up the middle to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead.
Buffalo would add to their lead in the top of the fourth as Aguon blasted a solo home run to left field and Madison Fernimen scored on a wild pitch to put UB up 5-2.
Lucyshyn would continue to do damage in the top of the sixth as she blasted a solo shot to right field to give the Bulls a 6-2 lead and UB would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Aguon smacked an RBI single to left field and that would be all Buffalo would need as freshman Julia Tarantino retired the Zips in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Ally Marcano picked up her second straight win as she gave up two runs on five hits while striking out three batters in five and two thirds innings of work.
Buffalo concludes the series with the Zips on Sunday at 12pm.
