
Bulls Split Weekend Series At Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, MI – For the second straight day the University at Buffalo volleyball team and Eastern Michigan played a five set match, but on Friday afternoon it was the Eagles who emerged victorious, 3-2.
Eastern Michigan took the contest 25-17, 27-29, 20-25, 25-12, 15-11 as EMU outhit the Bulls, .238 to .160. After falling to Buffalo on Thursday, the Eagles got out to a quick start in the first set, leading 9-2. UB would cut it to 17-14, but Eastern Michigan took the first.
An ace from freshman Milla Malik opened a 7-4 lead for Buffalo in the second. The Bulls continued to lead in the second until Eastern Michigan would tie things up at 22-22. Both teams would end up fighting off set point opportunities for their opponents and with the set tied at 27-27 a kill from Malik and an EMU error would give the set to UB, tying the match up. In the second set alone, Malik and fellow freshman Emma Gielas combined for 12 kills and just one error.
The Bulls led for much of the third set as an ace from junior setter Kyndal Bacon opened an 17-11 lead for UB. The Eagles would come back to pull within two, but three straight UB points put Buffalo ahead 23-18. A kill from sophomore Courtney Okwara closed out the set, giving the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
However, Eastern Michigan saved its best performance for the fourth set, sending the match to a fifth and deciding set for the second straight day. Buffalo led 8-6 midway through the fifth set, but Eastern Michigan went on a 5-1 run to take a commanding 13-9 lead in the shortened fifth. The Eagles would go on to win it, 15-11.
Malik led the Bulls with 19 kills, tying her career high from yesterday, while adding 15 digs and a block. Gielas added 17 kills just one day after a career high 21 as she hit .316.
Senior Lexi Nordmann also finished in double figures with 10 kills, while Okwara added five.
Bacon finished with 48 assists and 14 digs, while adding three kills and a pair of aces.
Defensively, Jenna Sonnenberg finished with 16 digs, while Gielas had nine and Paige Beck finished with eight. Nordmann and Bacon each finished with three total blocks.
The Bulls will remain on the road next week when they head to Western Michigan for a pair of matches.
