CONWAY, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team concluded action at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina on Sunday by dropping a pair of games to Saint Francis. The Bulls lost the opener, 11-4, and fell in the second game, 3-0.
In game one, the Red Flash scored three runs in each of the first three innings to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Saint Francis capped on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Bulls tried to rally. UB scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough.
Freshman Ally Sobaszek drove in Brianna Castro for UB's first run. Rachel Steffan knocked in her third run of the weekend with an RBI single that scored Alexis Matheney. Sobaszek scored on an RBI groundout out Mykaela Martin. Toni Cunnigham singled home Steffan for the Bulls' final run of the game.
Sobaszek was 2-for-2 in the game, accounting for two of the Bulls' six hits in the game.
The Bulls struggled to get their bats going in game two as they lost to the Red Flash, 3-0. St. Francis starting pitcher Grace Vesco was dealing as she didn't allow a UB hit in the game.
It was a good outing for UB starting pitcher Ally Marcano. The Coastal Carolina transfer allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings.
The Bulls will be back in action beginning next Friday at the Louisiana Lafayette/LSU Tournament. UB will open against the host Ragin' Cajuns. The Bulls will also play Oklahoma State and LSU.
