
Young Bulls Drop First Two Games of the Season

CONWAY, SC – A youthful University at Buffalo softball squad opened the 2021 campaign on Saturday in at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Bulls fell to East Carolina, 9-4, in the opener before dropping a 6-0 decision to the host Chanticleers in the nightcap.
Freshman Rachel Steffan homered and drove in two runs for the Bulls in the opener against East Carolina. Fellow freshman Madison Ferniman also went deep and had three hits in the game.
After giving up two runs in the top first inning, Steffan knocked in the Bulls first run of the season when she lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Alexis Matheny from third base.
The Pirates scored six runs in the top of the third inning to take control of the game, 8-1. A Matheny sacrifice fly drove in Hannah Bardeen to cut the ECU lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Steffan got the Bulls one run closer with a solo home run in the fifth to cut the East Carolina lead to 8-3. After East Carolina answered with a solo shot of its own in the top of the sixth, Ferniman hit her first career home run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 9-4. Ferniman was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game.
The Bulls had 10 hits against the Pirates.
In the second game of the day, Buffalo struggled to get its bats going it lost to Coastal Carolina, 6-0. UB was held to only two hits in the game - base hits by Steffan and Alicia Peters.
The Bulls will be back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader against St. Francis. First pitch is slated for 9:30 am.
