PRINCETON, NJ – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fought hard for 45 minutes but came up just short as the Bulls fell to Princeton 79-77 in overtime at Jadwin Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Redshirt fifth year forward Summer Hemphill made a pair of free throws with one second left in regulation to tie the game at 66 and force overtime but costly turnovers and poor shooting at the free throw line proved to be the difference as the Bulls shot just 2-of-6 from the charity stripe while the Tigers converted 7-of-10 free throw attempts in the extra period.
Junior guard Dyaisha Fair led all scorers with 31 points, including five three-pointers, to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Cheyenne McEvans scored a season-high 16 points, freshman Georgia Woolley scored in double figures for the fourth straight game with 14 points and Hemphill added 12 points as well.
After a slow start to the game for both teams, Abby Meyers knocked down a three for Princeton to give the Tigers a 7-4 lead at the first media timeout. Fair cut the lead to two with a spot up triple, but the Tigers answered with an 8-0 run to take a 17-7 lead at the 1:39 mark. Woolley knocked down a spot up three to stop the run, but UB was held without a field goal for the remainder of the quarter as the Tigers extended their lead to 21-10 at the end of the first.
The scoreless drought continued for the UB offense to start the second quarter and the Tigers capitalized as they took a 28-10 lead early in the first quarter before Woolley drained a corner triple to stop the run. Later, Woolley knocked down back-to-back mid-range jumpers and McEvans scored on a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to 30-19 and force a Tigers timeout at the 4:27 mark. The UB defense continued to lock down the Tigers, holding them scoreless for six minutes, and it would turn into points at the other end as Fair three straight triples to put UB up 34-30 with just under a minute to play and the Bulls would lead 34-33 at the half.
Buffalo closed the second quarter on a 24-5 run on 60% shooting, including four from beyond the arc and 10 points in the paint, while also scoring 14 points off Princeton turnovers.
It was a back-and-forth start to the third quarter before McEvans went on a 5-0 run, capped by an and-one bucket, to put UB up 41-38 at the 5:44 mark and then Fair scored on a fastbreak layup to extend the run to 7-0 and give the Bulls a 43-38 lead at the media timeout. McEvans continued to heat up as she knocked down a corner three off the kick from Fair to extend the lead to 46-38 but the Tigers closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to retake the lead, 47-46, at the end of the third.
The teams traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter before a pair of free throws from Hemphill and a fastbreak basket by Fair gave UB a 53-51 lead, but the Tigers answered with a triple to regain the lead at the 6:24 mark. Fair continued to attack as she found Hemphill with a great dump down pass to give UB a 60-56 at the 3:52 mark and later, McEvans added an offensive putback to extend the UB lead to four, but Princeton answered with a 5-0 run to take a 63-62 lead at the 1:46 mark. McEvans tied the game 63-63 at the free throw line but the Tigers scored on the other end to take a two point lead with one minute to play. Later, with Buffalo down two, the UB defense came up with a big stop to force a shot clock violation and give UB ball with 22.4 seconds to go. Fair missed on a runner, but Hemphill would later get the ball and was fouled in the act of shooting and she made both attempts to send the game to overtime.
The Bulls won the battle in the paint, 28-18, and scored 22 points off of Princeton turnovers while also scoring 17 fastbreak points.
