Bulls Drop Wednesday Affair

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team lost to Akron on Wednesday night 3-1 at Alumni Arena. The loss was UB's fifth straight defeat.
Akron took the contest 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19 as the Zips outhit the Bulls .224 to .171. UB played its best in the second set where the Bulls turned it on late to tie up the match. Trailing 18-17, Buffalo scored seven straight points to take the 24-18 advantage. Akron saved one set point, but a kill from freshman Mandy Leigh clinched the set. However, UB was unable to ride the momentum as the Zips won sets three and four.
Sophomore Milla Malik led UB with 18 kills, while Emma Gielas finished with 12. Maria Futey added seven kills and Courtney Okwara added six. Leigh dished out 41 assists to go along with two kills.
Defensively, Jenna Sonnenberg had 13 digs, while Malik added 12 and Futey finished with 11. Leigh chipped in 10 digs. UB had 8.0 total blocks, led by six from Olivia DeBortoli.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday night when they host Ohio for the first of two matches beginning at 6pm.
