BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end with a 79-63 loss to Central Michigan at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Bulls fall to 7-3 on the year and 4-1 in league play.
The Bulls were led by sophomore guard Dyaisha Fair who tied a season-high with 30 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jazmine Young also scored in double-figures with 13 points.
After a slow start, the two teams would trade baskets and the game was tied at nine at the first media timeout. The Chippewas would go on an 8-2 run out of the media to take a 17-11 lead at the 1:57 mark before Young stopped the bleeding with a step-back three to cut the CMU lead to 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The back-and-forth affair would continue to start the second quarter before the Bulls ripped off a 6-0 run in just over one minute, capped by a pair of transition buckets by Young and Cheyenne McEvans, to give UB a 22-19 lead and force a CMU timeout at the 7:12 mark. After a 6-0 CMU run, Buffalo would tie the game at 26 on a pair of free throws by Hanna Hall but the Chippewas closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 31-26 lead at the half.
Central Michigan would extend their lead to 10 early in the third quarter before Fair went on a 7-0 run by herself to cut the CMU lead to 36-33 at the 6:20 mark. The Chippewas would answer with back-to-back three's to take a 42-33 lead at the media timeout and would knock down another pair of triples to extend the lead to 12 at the 2:43 mark. Young ignited a 7-0 UB run with a step-back triple to cut the lead 47-42 with just over a minute to play but Micaela Kelly answered with a three of her own in the final seconds to cap a 5-0 run and give the Chippewas a 52-42 lead at the end of the third.
The two teams would trade baskets in the beginning part of the fourth quarter with UB getting no closer than nine as Central Michigan led 64-52 at the 4:55 mark. The Bulls used a mini 5-2 run, capped by an Adeyeye layup, to cut the lead to 68-59 at the 2:47 mark but that would be as close as the Bulls would get as the Chippewas sealed the game from the charity stripe, going 8-for-8 from the line in the final minutes to secure the victory.
The Bulls held the narrow 30-28 advantage in the paint but were outrebounded for the second time in the last three games as the Chippewas held a 39-35 edge on the glass.
Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday, January 13, when they host Bowling Green at 5pm.
