MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – University at Buffalo women's basketball sophomore guard Dyaisha Fair had a career day, but UB's second half comeback came up short as the Bulls fell 66-62 at Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Fair scored her 1,000th career point on a big three-pointer from the top of the key at the end of the third quarter. Not only is she the fastest to score 1,000 career points in school history, she is also the 14th fastest in Division I women's basketball history, getting to that career mark in just 44 games.
"I could not be more proud of Dyaisha if she were my own child," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "From what she has endured, to put the team on her shoulders like she has and for everybody to know she is the one to be stopped and to continue on and perform day in and day out, I am so humbled to coach someone with that much power in such a small body. I am very fortunate to be in her space and be a witness to greatness. We fight on."
Fair led the Bulls with 22 points to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals. Sophomore center Elea Gaba recorded a career-high 17 points.
The Bulls would struggle offensively to start the game as Central Michigan led 7-0 at the first media timeout. Fair ended the UB scoring drought with a pull up jumper in the lane at the 3:09 mark and later got the jumper to go plus the foul to cut the CMU lead in half but the Chippewas would score in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first.
Buckets by Jazmine Young and Gaba in the early minutes of the second quarter cut the CMU lead to 14-11 at the 8:32 mark. The two teams would trade baskets before the Chippewas went on a run to take a 27-16 lead at the media timeout. A 5-0 UB run, capped by a triple from Jessika Schiffer, cut the CMU lead to 30-24 but Maddy Watters knocked down a jumper in the final seconds of the half to give the Chippewas a 32-24 lead at the break.
The Bulls took advantage of a three-plus minute CMU scoring drought to start the third quarter to cut the lead to 32-28 and later, Gaba converted an offensive rebound putback to cut the lead to 34-30 and force a CMU timeout at the 6:18 mark. After a 5-0 CMU run the Bulls answered with a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 44-39 at the 2:34 mark. The Buffalo offense would continue to click as they closed the quarter on an 11-0 run, capped by a pair of triples from Fair and Hanna Hall, to take a 50-46 lead at the end of the third.
The Bulls would go up 55-50 on a Schiffer triple at the 7:53 mark but the Chippewas answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 55-54 at the final media timeout. The two teams would trade 5-0 runs out of the media timeout and the game would be knotted 59-59 at the 2:58 mark. Later, Hall would knock down a huge three to put UB up 62-61 at the 1:48 mark but that would be it for Buffalo as the Chippewas closed the game on a 5-0 run and the Bulls were unable to convert on any three point attempts in the final two possessions.
Buffalo dominated the paint 34-18 and won the battle on the glass 48-39, including 23 offensive boards which UB turned into 25 second chance points.
The Bulls return to action on Wednesday, February 3, at Akron.
