BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team led for all but four minutes in a 74-65 win over Toledo at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Bulls improve to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in league play.
Buffalo was led by sophomore Dyaisha Fair who scored a game-high 25 points, including 18 in the second half, to go with nine assists, five rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Jessika Schiffer tied a career-high with 14 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, and junior guard Jazmine Young also scored in double figures with 12 points.
The Rockets would take an early 5-4 lead before the Bulls responded with a 7-0 run to take an 11-5 lead and force a Toledo timeout at the 4:19 mark. The Bulls would extend the run to 14-2, capped by a three from Schiffer and a transition layup by Fair, to take an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Toledo scored five straight points early in the second quarter but Schiffer stopped the UB scoring drought with a pull up jumper in the lane to give the Bulls a 24-13 lead at the 6:58 mark and force a Rockets timeout. Toledo responded with an 11-0 run to tie the game 24-24 before Hanna Hall found Keowa Walters on the baseline and she knocked down a mid-range jumper to stop a four minute UB scoring drought and spark a 5-0 run to close the quarter as the Bulls took a 29-24 lead at the half.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the third quarter before a Rockets' three cut the UB lead to 38-33 at the 5:47 mark, but Young slashed to the basket and got the bucket and the foul to give UB a 40-33 lead at the media timeout. The Bulls would heat up from beyond the arc coming out of the media as Schiffer hit back-to-back corner triples and Fair knocked down a three of her own to give UB 51-36 lead at the 2:19 mark and Buffalo would lead 55-44 at the end of three quarters of play.
Toledo opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the UB lead to 57-53 at the 6:38 mark before Fair sliced to the basket for two to put the Bulls up 59-53 at the media timeout. Fair continued to attack as she sliced to the basket and finished off glass and later hit a pull up jumper in the paint to put UB up 63-56 at the 2:52 mark. The teams would trade baskets for the next few minutes but the Rockets would get no closer than four as the Bulls closed the game on a 7-2 run in the final minute to secure the victory.
Sophomore Elea Gaba gave the Bulls big minutes once again as she scored eight points to go along with nine rebounds. Junior center Zena Elias scored a career-high six points to go with five rebounds and Adebola Adeyeye recorded a career-high four blocks in the win. Buffalo outrebounded the Rockets 46-39 and dominated the paint 36-16. The Bulls are now 5-1 this season when holding opponents to less than 70 points.
"What a collective effort by the team," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We really locked in on the defensive side of the ball. We want to shoot better from the free throw line but we made them earn everything on defense. We need to get better but I thought we took a great step towards that today. Great team win!"
The Bulls return to action on Saturday, January 30, as they travel to Mount Pleasant for a rematch with the Central Michigan Chippewas.
