Hammond, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Grambling State 8-7 in walkoff fashion in game one of the day before falling to Southeastern Louisiana 4-0 in game two.
After escaping a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, the Bulls would score the first runs of the game in the bottom of the inning as, in an attempt to pick off Jenelle Martinez, Rikelle Miller threw the ball down the right field line into the corner, allowing Anna Aguon and Martinez to score to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.
Grambling State would have an immediate answer in the top of the second as they scored a pair of runs on an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 and would add another run in the top of the third before breaking through for three runs on three hits and two UB errors to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
Buffalo would fight back in the bottom of the inning as Aguon led off with a double, followed by a single by Martinez and then Aguon scored on a wild pitch. Later, Gabby Keller scored Martinez on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 6-4. UB looked like they were going to add another run two batters later when Brianna Castro ripped line drive to right field but A'yanna Williams made a diving catch to end the inning.
UB would claw within one in the bottom of the sixth as Aguon ripped an RBI double to right field to cut the Tigers lead to 6-5 but the Bulls were unable to get her home and that would prove to be costly as Grambling State would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-5.
Castro would get revenge in the bottom of the seventh as she singled to right field to load the bases and Olivia Kincanon scored on a fielder's choice RBI to pull UB back within one and then Alexis Matheney delivered the dagger, smacking a two-RBI triple to left center field to secure the 8-7 walk off victory.
Kincanon went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate while Madelyn Hickingbottom picked up her second win of the season, recording eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
In game two, offense would be at a premium in the early going as Southeastern Louisiana took an early 2-0 lead through three innings of play. The Bulls would load the bases in the top of the fifth but would leave them juiced and that would prove to be costly as the Lions would add another two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-0.
Buffalo would again load the bases in the top of the sixth but once again would be unable to plate a run and that would cost them as the hosts were able to hold on to preserve the victory.
Gabby Keller led UB at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the night. Alexis Lucyshyn gave up four hits on six hits while striking out five in six innings of work in the circle.
"It was nice to see us fight back and come back and get the win in game one," said head coach Mike Ruechel. "We did not play good defense early on but it was nice to see us rebound in game two by cleaning up the defense, but we need to get better in timely hitting situations. We hit the ball really well but unfortunately couldn't find the hole. We are looking forward to closing out the weekend strong on Sunday."
Buffalo wraps up play at the Lion Classic on Sunday, with a game against Alabama State at 11am EST.
