BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team (5-2, 4-1 MAC) are in their final stages of preparation for the 2020 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships that begin on Wednesday evening. The championships will run through Saturday evening as UB will host this year's championships at the Alumni Arena Pool and Natatorium. This marks the first time since the 2012-13 season where UB has hosted the conference championships.
The Bulls have been preparing for this week since Saturday, Feb. 1 when UB hosted Akron and Duquesne. UB went on to finish the day 2-0. This included narrowly edging MAC preseason favorite and six-time consecutive MAC champion Akron by a score of 146.5-133.
At the 2019 MAC Championships, the Bulls took home bronze with 502 points as the University of Akron won their sixth consecutive MAC title with 867 points. Eastern Michigan took silver with 583 points. This year's preseason coaches' poll had Akron in first followed by UB and Eastern Michigan. This makes for a very exciting week.
A season ago, Olivia Sapio won the individual title for the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.11. Sapio will look to repeat in the event for the first time since Spencer Rodriguez won the event for the Bulls in 2014 and 2015.
Junior Brittney Beetcher, who was crowned with MAC Swimmer of the Week honors earlier in the season, will look to continue her success this week. She has had dominant performances in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Beetcher completed the 200 freestyle in 1:52.92 at Penn State and the 500 freestyle in 4:48.19 at Ohio State.
Seniors Katelyn Burns, Grace Baumer, Andrea Ernst and Anna Vitolins look to finish their collegiate swim careers with a flourish. Combined, they hold 21 UB top-10 times.
In the diving well, freshman Victoria Franz looks to compete for a podium finish in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. The freshman diver is undefeated on the season in both events with season-high scores of 323.35 in the 1-meter and 342.80 in the 3-meter dive.
The MAC Championships will begin on Wednesday night with the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay. For fans interested in following along, each session will be streamed on YouTube.
