SPARTANBURG, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games to open the Upstate Classic on Friday, falling to 6-2 to UMass in game one before dropping game two against Oakland, 6-1.
UMass took an early lead in game one as Dani Ellis hit a two-run homer to left to give the Minutewomen a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman Brianna Castro flashed some leather later in the inning as she made a sliding stop at shortstop and fired a perfect throw across the diamond to get the runner and limit the damage.
UMass would add two runs in the top of the second on an RBI single and an RBI walk to go up 4-0.
Junior Anna Aguon would break up UMass' Kiara Oliver's no-hitter in the fourth with a single to center field but the Bulls were unable to plate a run and that would prove costly as the Minutewomen added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two run homer by Kendra Allen to take a 6-0 lead.
The Bulls would finally breakthrough in the bottom of the sixth as Jenelle Martinez doubled to right field and Gabby Keller plated a run with an RBI up the middle to cut the lead to 6-1. Buffalo would add another run in the bottom of the seventh on an Alicia Peters solo home run to left but that would be as close as they would get as UMass held on for the win.
Keller and Peters led UB at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI each. Freshman Madelyn Hickingbottom gave up six runs on eight hits while striking out five in the loss.
In game two, sophomore Hannah Bardeen would put the Bulls on the board in the bottom of the second as she blasted a solo home run to left field to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
But it would be all Oakland from there as the Grizzlies tied the game on a wild pitch in the fourth and would put the game away in the sixth and seventh innings, adding five runs on four hits, while the Bulls managed just three hits after Bardeen's homer and left five base runners stranded.
Freshman Alexis Lucyshyn got the loss, giving up six runs, three earned, on eight hits in seven innings of work.
Buffalo returns to action on Saturday with an 11am contest against Maryland Eastern Shore.
