NORTON, OH – The University at Buffalo cross country team put forth a dominant effort at the season-opening Tommy Evans Invite, their lone tune up before the Mid-American Conference Championships in just two weeks.
On the men's side, UB defeated Kent State, 22-39 as the Bulls claimed six of the top eight positions. Junior Scott Loforte paced the way for Buffalo with a second place finish, clocking in at 24:48 in the 8k race, just two seconds behind the leader.
Sophomore Armani Merlino finished third (25:02), while junior Cal Puskar finished fourth (25:04). Benjamin Cardamone crossed the finish line at 25:25 for sixth place, followed by Ryan Buzby (25:33) and Sean O'Brien (25:48). Patrick Hazlet finished in 10th place, while Christopher Nowak finished 12th.
"The men went to the front and controlled the pace through 4K," said associate head coach Todd Witzleben. "Seeing all of our guys coming through together should give us confidence leading into the MAC Championship where it is our goal to improve on our third place performance from last year."
On the women's side, junior Riley Jones was the lone Buffalo competitor as she raced against athletes from Akron and Kent State. Jones finished the 6k race in 23:52, good for ninth place.
"Riley had a strong start, but the lack of races as well as her not having a pack of teammates to run with was tough," said head coach Vicki Mitchell. "Overall, she got a good hard effort in prior to MACs and she is ready to improve on her race from a year ago."
The 2020 MAC Championships will be on Saturday, Nov. 21. More imformation on that race will be announced in the coming days.
