
UB Posts Strong Results at Upstate Challenge

ITHACA, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field program competed in the Upstate Challenge hosted by Cornell University. The men's team placed fifth with 64 points, while the women's team finished third with 90 points. This marks the first meet of the season that was scored.
Kelsey Shapiro finished in second place in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,271 points. Her score is her personal-best score by over 300 points. In the men's heptathlon, Steven Gilfus finished in eighth place with a score of 4,051.
Senior Sam Wray won the weight throw with a distance of 18.92m, this distance was almost two meters further than the next competitor. In the women's shot put, Molly McCreedy won with a distance of 14.77m, a personal-best. Nakia Williams tied his personal-best in the high jump with a height of 2.04m/6-08.25.
Christina Wende set a college personal-best in the long jump as she leaped a distance of 5.54m/18-02.25. This distance also marks a season-best for the program.
Antoinette Miller had a breakthrough day running to a second place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.83, while also finishing second in the high jump. Her height of 1.67m/5-05.75 is now ninth in UB's all-time list. Both her marks are both personal-records.
"Today's meet gave many of our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against quality competition in a great facility," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "Many reached personal-best marks, as we continue to move the needle forward."

- Meghan LaTuso (fifth place – 5:08.73), Riley Jones (seventh place – 5:15.29), Alexia Hecico (ninth place – 5:16.40) and Maxine Dupuis (10th place – 5:17.82) earned personal-bests in the mile run as Riley Jones finished seventh place in 5:15.29
- Jacob Liberati finished with a season-best 6.74m/22-01.50 in the long jump, finished in fourth place
- Chineme Ononiwu tied a season-best in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.48
- Samantha Shea (sixth place - 8.03) finished the 60 meter dash with a personal-best
- Jonathan Surdej (third place – 16.70m) and Mark Przybocki (sixth place – 14.59m) earned personal-bests in the shot put
