BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team withstood a late rally by Eastern Michigan to hang on for the 66-63 win over the Eagles at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, head coach Felisha Legette-Jack tied Sal Buscaglia for the all-time program wins record at 155.
Buffalo was led by freshman guard Dyaisha Fair who recorded her second straight 20+ point performance, scoring a game-high 22 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Adebola Adeyeye recorded her second career double-double, tying a career-high with 14 rebounds in addition to 14 points. Senior Theresa Onwuka and junior Hanna Hall also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Eagles would score the first basket of the game but Buffalo would rip off a 10-2 run, led by eight points from Adeyeye, to take a 10-2 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulls would extend their lead to 16-2 at the 2:33 mark, taking advantage of a seven plus minute Eagles scoring drought, but EMU would break through, closing the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the UB lead to 16-9 at the end of the first.
It would be a back-and-forth affair to start the second quarter as the two teams traded baskets and UB maintained a 26-21 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo would pull ahead and go up 30-23 lead at the 1:20 mark on back-to-back buckets by Onwuka and Loren Christie and UB would take a 34-25 lead at the break courtesy of a driving layup by Fair in the final seconds of the half.
Buffalo would take an early 12 point lead in the third quarter before EMU battled back to cut the lead to six at the 5:18 mark on a triple by Jenna Annecchiarico, but UB responded with a 5-0 run on an Adeyeye offensive putback and a big spot-up three from Hall to take a 46-35 lead at the media timeout and the Bulls would lead 49-39 at the end of the third.
The two teams would continue to battle to start the fourth quarter before Fair drilled back-to-back three's to put UB up 57-46 at the 6:50 mark and Buffalo would lead 61-51 at the final media timeout. Fair would continue to do her thing as she put on the moves and found Adeyeye on the block for the easy bucket, UB leads 63-54 at the 2:03 mark. The Eagles rallied with a 7-0 over the final 19 seconds but they would come up just short as the Bulls hung on for the narrow victory.
The Bulls won the battle on the glass 46-36 and held a narrow 36-32 edge in points in the paint.
"What a great team win, what a fight to the finish," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "This conference is really good and nobody is going to blow anybody out but we have to sustain and we have to continue, and I think our kids really locked in and I'm proud of a great team effort."
Buffalo begins a two-game road trip on Wednesday, January 22, as they travel to Muncie, Indiana for a 7pm contest against the Ball State Cardinals.
