MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team rallied back from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to cut the lead to three with 51 seconds to go, but the Bulls' rally came up just short as they fell 69-65 at Ball State on Wednesday night at Worthen Arena.
The Bulls were led by junior guard Hanna Hall who scored 17 points, including tying her career-high with five three's. Senior Theresa Onwuka scored 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and five steals and freshman Dyaisha Fair also got into double figures with 11 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Hall would provide a spark to begin the game as she drilled back-to-back three's to give the Bulls an early 6-0 lead and they would extend the run to 11-4 at the first media timeout as Fair dropped in a floater and Onwuka converted from beyond the arc. A 5-2 Cardinals run cut the UB lead to 13-9 before Hall converted on a second-chance three to put BU back up 16-9 at the 2:32 mark and Buffalo would lead 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulls would continue to stay hot from deep to start the second quarter as Hall and Hamilton knocked down a pair of triples to put UB up 25-11 at the 6:33 mark. The Cardinals offense would come alive as they put together an 8-3 run to cut the UB lead to 28-19 at the media timeout. Ball State would then extend the run to 13-3 on a three from Jasmin Samz to trim the lead to four and force a UB timeout. Hall knocked down a pull up jumper in the lane to end the three-plus minute Bulls scoring drought and give UB a 30-24 lead at the 2:26 mark and they would withstand one last Cardinals run to take a 32-29 lead at the break.
Ball State took their first lead of the game, 36-34, at the 8:36 mark of the third quarter and would extend their lead to nine before a pair of free throws from Onwuka would end a two-plus minute UB scoring drought and cut the lead to 52-45, but the Cardinals closed the quarter on a mini 4-0 run to take a 56-45 lead at the end of the third.
Buffalo opened the fourth quarter on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 57-51 at the 7:08 mark and later Elea Gaba would bank one home off the glass to bring the Bulls within four, but Sydney Freeman answered with a triple on the other end to give Ball State a 60-53 lead at the final media timeout. A 4-0 UB run would cut the lead to 66-61 at the 2:08 mark and later, Onwuka would drain a corner three and knock down a free throw to cut the lead to 68-65 with 51 seconds remaining but that would be as close as they would come Buffalo was unable to score on their final two possessions of the game.
The Bulls won the battle of the paint 28-20 and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points but the Cardinals had the edge on the glass 42-40 and scored 18 points off 18 Buffalo turnovers.
Buffalo concludes its two-game road trip at Kent State on Saturday with a 1pm tip against the Golden Flashes.
